Dvor municipality development opportunities

The development aspect of the project of establishing the Radioactive Waste Management Centre refers to the improvement of living conditions and the opening of opportunities for the further economic development of the area where the Centre was established. In order to develop guidelines on how to make progress and to achieve the maximum profit of financial support intended for the local community, the Fund focuses part of its activities on the preparation and realization of analyses concerning the current state of the local community from a social and economic aspect.

One of these activities is the preparation of the study titled “Development Opportunities and Challenges of the Wider Area of Dvor Municipality Caused by Locating the RW Management Centre in Čerkezovac”. The study was made by the Urban Planning Institute of Croatia and Institute of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar.

The study examines the location of the Centre from the aspect of spatial -programme, infrastructure-construction and sociology, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced by the Dvor Municipality and its wider area due to the location of the Centre.

The Republic of Croatia is obligated to manage radioactive waste and disused ionising radiation sources which are currently located at two locations in Zagreb in interim storage facilities at the Ruđer Bošković Institute and Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health, as well as half of the low and intermediate level radioactive waste currently located in the storage facility of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant.

For this purpose, an RW Management Centre needs to be established, which will be managed by the Fund. We have made this study with several basic goals as to establish the Centre transparently and to entirely inform the public:

  • to examine the location of the future Centre from the aspect of spatial-programme and infrastructure-construction, but also the entire Dvor Municipality, by conducting analyses of spatial planning documentation and in the field,
  • to examine the development opportunities and challenges the local community might face due to the locating of the Centre in the former Čerkezovac Military Logistics Complex,
  • to gain insight into the public attitudes towards local development needs and potentials, and the impact that the construction of such infrastructure might have on the quality of life of the local population and overall development perspective of the area of Dvor.

The results of the study are presented in our videos.
