Seismic Hazard Assessment

In November 2020, a seismographic station was set up at the Centre site to continuously monitor, transmit and analyse data and report required findings for seismic hazard analyses . The system comprises a high-sensitivity, broadband digital seismograph and digital accelerograph. The seismograph is a measuring device used to automatically measure and record the movement of the ground during an earthquake as well as the intensity, direction and duration of the movement. The accelerograph is a seismological device for recording the acceleration of the ground during strong earthquakes. It is a useful instrument when the movement of the ground is too intense for the sensitive seismograph to measure. The seismographic station setup is part of the Croatian seismograph and accelerograph network that is run by the Seismological Service of the Republic of Croatia and will remain property of the Service. Based on earthquake records, the Seismological Service provides information to citizens and various services.

In 2015, the Seismic Hazard Assessment for the Wider Zrinska Gora Area made recommendations for the further research and monitoring of seismic activity. The recommendations included preparing the Seismotectonic Analysis and Seismic Hazard Assessment for the LILW storage site at the RW Management Centre. The relevant public procurement procedure is currently ongoing. The project objectives are to create and maintain a seismograph and accelerograph network around the Čerkezovac site to more accurately measure and record earth displacement and acceleration during earthquakes, as well as analyse seismic hazard for the future Krško NPP LILW storage site at the RW Management Centre at Čerkezovac for design, safety analysis and environmental impact assessment purposes. The Seismic Hazard Assessment requires painstaking research efforts spearheaded by experts from Geotechnical Studio, the Faculty of Geodesy and the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Zagreb. The main purpose of this study is to gain a complete and accurate insight into the geological composition and structure of terrain on-site.
