COOPERATION BETWEEN THE FUND AND THE COMPANY JAVYS

A Cooperation Agreement on the management of radioactive waste, spent fuel, decommissioning of nuclear facilities as well as consulting and engineering services related to these fields was signed with the company JAVYS (Jadrová a Vyrad'ovacia Spločnost). The cooperation project with the company Javys is led by the Sector for Coordination of the Preparation and Development of the Programme for the Decommissioning and Disposal of RW and SNF from the Krško NPP.

The company JAVYS, which is 100% state-owned, performs all activities of radioactive waste management, including the production of concrete containers licensed for the transport and permanent management of low level radioactive waste. JAVYS is also in charge of storing spent nuclear fuel.

Following the signing of the Agreement, the parties have established the principles under which the cooperation will take place in order to strengthen their knowledge and position on the market of the above services using the know-how of both parties.

Slovakia meets 55% of its electricity needs from the existing two nuclear power plants and the Energy Strategy assumes this energy source will meet all the country’s energy needs.

At the Jaslovské Bohunice site, solid and liquid radioactive waste is transported, prepared, treated (by incineration, super-compacting, concentration, solidification…), conditioned and packaged in containers. Received RW packages are checked at the entrance to the plant because each waste stream must meet the entry criteria. Containers manufactured from fibre-reinforced concrete and the cement mixture with which they are filled are controlled, as well as the final product: a container containing barrels of conditioned waste, filled with a mixture of cement that must meet the criteria for acceptance into the low level RW repository. At this site, there are also facilities for decommissioning of units that have stopped operating (separation, cutting, decontamination), interim storage facilities of very low level radioactive waste from decommissioning, long-term storage facility for radioactive waste and disused sources that do not meet the requirements for the low level RW repository, wet storage facility for SNF, laboratories and the Javys info centre. The construction of a plant for melting metal waste from decommissioning is planned.

At the Mochovce site, there is a plant for processing liquid radioactive waste from power plants, a radioactive waste storage facility and a national surface repository for low level RW.

JAVYS has a closed radioactive waste management system for radioactive waste generated in Slovakia, sufficient capacity and many years of experience. It provides services for the most appropriate way of treatment, conditioning, packaging and transporting of low level and intermediate level radioactive waste generated outside the territory of Slovakia (for instance, it processes and packages Italian RW; that is, it carries out all steps of waste management that are prior to disposal).
