The legislative framework regulates the performance of activities related to the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in a manner that adequately protects human lives, property and the environment.

In the interest of a safe and secure radioactive waste and spent fuel management, various international and regional organisations have been founded with the aim of harmonising legal acts concerning the safety of radioactive waste management safety and protection against ionizing radiation.

By signing international treaties, conventions and agreements, the states undertake to respect the provisions of the signed legal documents, as well as the standards, instructions and recommendations issued by these organisations.
