RW and SNF Management

Radioactive waste is created in the usage of sources of ionizing radiation in energetics, research, medicine, dental medicine, the industry, lightning rods, fire protection (smoke detectors) and for defense purposes.

The amount of radioactive waste generated in Croatia to this day is approximately 7.5 m3, total activity of approximately 55 TBq. It is stored in temporary storages at the Ruđer Bošković Institute and the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health in Zagreb, and with the users of sources of ionizing radiation (producers). A central institutional radioactive waste and spent sources storage must be established, where conditioned and packaged waste will be brought and stored.

Radioactive waste in energetics is created in the operation, maintenance and decommissioning of nuclear power plants. At the end of 2014, 2,258 m3 of low and intermediate level radioactive waste (LILW), total activity of 18.5 TBq was stored at Krško NPP's operational storage. At Krško NPP, LILW is processed, conditioned and packed in casks and other storage packaging. It is expected that by the end of the power plant's lifespan 3,560 m3 of operational LILW and approximately 5,300 tons of decommissioning waste will be generated. Croatia is a co-owner of Krško NPP and is responsible for the disposal of half of the radioactive waste. Long-term storage and disposal in a near-surface repository is planned.

In addition, approximately 1330 tons of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) will be generated during Krško NPP's lifespan. Currently SNF is being stored in a boron water pool. Construction of a dry storage on site at Krško NPP is planned, and it should be operational in 2019.

You can read more about Croatian obligations regarding radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel disposal, as well as Croatian and European Union legislation, in our chapters on radioactive waste management.
